Asparagus was originally grown in mounds of earth, with the spear cut under the earth with a special knife that looked like a poker. At the bigger farms/ nurseries in the area this method is no longer employed, instead someone lies on the back of a flat-bed van, cutting the vegetable just above the earth, as the van drives along.

We are at a moment in history where the traditional growing methods for the vegetable are on their way to becoming extinct, as the old growers are retiring or dying, and more mechanised approaches are employed to achieve a higher margin.

This is an ongoing series of images exploring the culture of asparagus growing on the Vale, focusing on both the growers and community centred around the traditional growing methods and mass production.
